Yirrmal & the Yolngu Boys

Yirrmal Marika, Raven Marika, Dion Wunungmurra and Jerol Wunungmurra are young Yolngu men from the Northeast Arnhem Land Communities of Yirrkala, Elcho Island and Gapuwiyak. They live in Geelong and attend St. Joseph’s College as part of the Marrma’ Rom Two Worlds Foundation Leadership Program.

The boys have been through Men’s Business and are culturally very strong. They have extensive knowledge of traditional Yolngu ‘Manikay’ Songs, and are excellent singers, dancers and didgeridoo ‘yidaki‘ players. They performed for the first time this year at the Lake Bolac Eel Festival, at the invitation of Neil Murray. At Queenscliff they will perform a mixture of traditional Ceremonial ‘Manikay’ Song cycles, original acoustic pop songs and some little known Arnhem Land covers.
