2019 QMF WAR ON WASTE UPDATE 2019 saw QMF continue to lead the way in event sustainability. This year QMF diverted a massive 95% of waste generate at the event from landfill. Just 178kg of waste (equivalent of 6.5 240L wheelie bins) collected at the festival was sent to landfill – an 82.2% decrease on 2018. We also became the first festival of our size (that we’re aware of) to go fully re-usable. This consisted of all vendors serving on re-usable crockery, cups and cutlery and implemented at no additional cost to patrons. This alone resulted in a 58% reduction in the amount of organic waste generated at the festival. Where did the waste go? Re-usable The re-usable plates, bowls and cups were washed in commercial dishwashing facilities and returned for meal service. This reduced the waste generated by throwing out single use packaging. Compost Organics collected have been sent to be turned into compost for gardens and agricultural use. Aluminium Cans Aluminium Cans have been sent to be recycled into new cans, airplane parts and building facades Cardboard Cardboard has been sent to be recycled to produce new cardboard and paper products Glass Glass bottles have been crushed and will be used in asphalting for new roads Soft Plastics Soft plastics have been collected and will be turned into furniture and building materials used at the 2020 Festival Our amazing patrons continue to support our efforts in moving towards being a zero waste festival. Thank you!
